Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson, AO is an American born, two-time Academy Award-winning Australian actor, director, producer and screenwriter. He was born in Peekskill, New York, the sixth of eleven children, and the second son of Hutton Gibson and Irish-born Anne Reilly Gibson. He moved to Australia when he was 12 years old and was educated by members of the Congregation of Christian Brothers at St. Leo's Catholic College in Wahroonga, New South Wales, during his high-school years at Startford upon Avon High. He later studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.

Before he became a Hollywood star, his starring roles in the Mad Max series and the films of Peter Weir during the New Wave of Australian cinema propelled him to international film stardom. After appearing in the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon series, he went on to direct and star in the Academy Award-winning Braveheart. His direction of Braveheart made him the sixth actor-turned-filmmaker to receive an Oscar for Best Director. In 2004, he directed and produced The Passion of the Christ, a controversial but hugely successful movie that portrayed the last hours of the life of Jesus Christ. On June 7, 1980, he married Robyn Moore. Their seven children are Hannah, twins Edward and Christian, William, Louis, Milo, and Thomas.
